Trelowia

Widegates, Looe, East Cornwall PL13 1QL

South Trelowia Barns has been home to Aranya and his partner Jules since the end of August 2019. It consists of two barns, one of which, a long-term holiday let, provides a fine classroom space and accommodation for 6 people in beds. The barns, which are around 200 years old, were converted to dwellings in the 1980s. Aranya and Jules are aiming to improve the energy efficiency of the buildings and have already added a 6kW solar array and battery system. Outside, the land extends to almost 0.5 acre - not much from a conventional food production perspective, but more than enough for two people to steward without the use of machinery. A strong emphasis is being put on home-scale food production and perennial planting, including a small forest garden. The site consists of a number of small areas, each different microclimates, offering a diversity of opportunities. It's hoped that everyone who visits will be able to observe an area similar to their own garden and what can be done there.

Getting There

By Train

To St Germans station:

  • Less trains run to St Germans than Liskeard, but it is the closest railway station to Trelowia. We intend to meet the St Germans train on Saturday afternoon with our car, as no buses run from there. More details about timing in the welcome letter.

To Liskeard station:

  • A more regular service runs to Liskeard, though it is further away - 7 miles from Trelowia. We may also be able to offer a pick up from Liskeard railway station. A regular bus certainly runs from there to Hessenfod (see directions below). We aim to meet the Hessenford bus if we can - if we know you'll be on it.

By Bus

From Plymouth city centre

  • To the Copley Arms in Hessenford (no 72) takes 43 minutes.
  • From there it's a 1.4 mile walk to South Trelowia Barns - approx 30 minutes (see cycling directions).

From Liskeard railway station

  • To the Hessenford opposite West End Cottages (no 75) takes 27 minutes.

Cycling / walking:

  • South Trelowia Barns is 5 miles from St Germans railway station, a trip that takes about 45 minutes by bicycle. Google offers three routes, the most southerly being probably the best to take.
  • After passing through Hessenford, continue westwards up the wooded hill and take the first turn on your left. It's a very tight, almost U-shaped bend. Cycle (or walk!) on up the hill - it's fairly steep for a while and a 50 metre climb. Having reached the ridge the lane begins to descend again towards the sea.
  • Once you reach the point at which the tarmac lane turns back on itself towards the north west, continue on ahead down the rough track. South Trelowia Barns is the third gate on the right, after a short wooded section.
